Floating platforms are the most efficient ways of reclaiming sea space. There are different designs of floating platforms;
- Spar platforms- suitable for environments with ice and winter
- Semi-submersible platforms- meant for deepwater production and drilling
- Tensioned leg platforms- supports dry trees
- Extendable draft platforms- used in ocean measurements and hydraulic power
Making a floating platform is not a very simple task and involves different steps;
- Build the frame
You first need to get closer to the water body to avoid dragging the final structure since it will be very heavy.
Depending on the size of the dock you are planning on having, put together the mainframe. Ensure that the plugs are tightened and apply a layer of silicone over the plug to prevent leakages.
- Support the frame
Measure the middle of the frame you built and place planks in a cross-sectional way to make the frame sturdier. The remaining bottom layer act as support frames as well hold the barrels against the dock and prevent them from pushing against the decking. Place the barrels to sit nicely on the boards without touching the ground, screw them to fit as well. Screw the barrels to provide cross support and keep them from moving back and forth while in water.
- Add floaters
These are just buoyant materials that will keep the whole floating platform afloat. They are mostly made of plastic. Place your floaters at the corners of your structure and add L braces at the support intersections to stabilize the structure.
You might consider placing hooks in the bottom layer of supports where your floaters are and tie them up with a rope across them.
- Flip the structure
Flip the structure into the water and tie it down to something. The floaters should be the only thing lying on the water to make the structure float. You would not wish to see it float away with the high current so tie it tightly with a rope to the shoreline.
- Deck the structure
You can use any material such as wood to deck your structure. Ensure that the planks of wood are close to each other.
- Float the structure
Untie the rope from the shoreline and float the structure out in the middle of the lake or pond for a nice floating platform.
Consider working on a ramp as a good way to keep the dock from drifting while at the shore.
- Ramping begins
You need to be able to sleep or step on the structure without slipping in the water. Use the extra boards remaining to keep everything flat. Frame the entire ramp with the boards and add the boards down the middle as support to the floaters as well as the walkway area to flip it over. Add some hooks to the floaters you previously used and rope it down. Finally, you are ready to freely flip and enjoy floating without much worries of diving into the water surface.
